Objective
This study aims to identify the dimensions and components of growth planning in audit firms based on the Ansoff Matrix and to develop a comprehensive model to guide this process. The proposed model is intended to assist audit firm partners in formulating and selecting appropriate growth strategies, monitoring strategic progress, and fostering the firm's sustainable growth and long-term excellence.
Methods
This is a developmental/applied study in terms of purpose, as it focuses on improving performance and practical applications and seeks to provide a suitable model. In terms of data collection method, this research can be classified as an exploratory study. Its statistical population includes members of the Iranian Supreme Council of the Society of Certified Public Accountants, partners and senior audit managers of the audit organizations and firms, and university faculty members with high skills and experience in auditing. In the first phase of the study, the dimensions, components, and subcomponents of growth planning were identified through a literature review and semi-structured interviews with 63 academic and professional experts. These elements were subsequently refined and validated using the fuzzy Delphi method. SmartPLS software was used for confirmatory factor analysis of the questionnaire. Then, the research components were ranked using the Analytic Network Process (ANP). Next, based on the resulting weights for the identified components and subcomponents, a growth planning model for auditing firms was developed and presented.
Results
Based on the Ansoff matrix, the presented model for growth planning in audit firms is categorized into two dimensions: markets/customers and services/products. The markets/customers dimension includes the components of customers, communications, competitors, advertising, and services. The product/service dimension includes the components of knowledge/learning, innovation, customers, output/achievement, marketing, and institutional positioning. Each identified component comprises several subcomponents. Overall, 37 subcomponents were identified within the markets/customers dimension and 46 within the services/products dimension. Consequently, the proposed model consists of 2 dimensions, 11 components, and 83 subcomponents. In the markets/customers dimension, the services component achieved the highest rank. Among its subcomponents, the geographical expansion of services ranked first. In the service/product dimension, the knowledge/learning component ranks first, and among its subcomponents, providing new and diverse services through cooperation with educational institutions and increasing knowledge and learning through teamwork ranked equally.
Conclusion
By separating the growth strategies of auditing firms into the four sections of the Ansoff matrix, we can conclude the following. In the market development strategy, geographical expansion of services, entering new and international markets, increasing cooperation with larger auditing firms, gaining knowledge about new market needs, and networking and establishing relationships with potential clients are emphasized. In the market penetration strategy, strengthening and developing relationships with existing and potential clients, improving the quality of assurance services, and increasing clients' knowledge and understanding of the industry are emphasized. In the service development strategy, developing a new generation of services, applying emerging technologies in providing services, and investing in technology infrastructure are emphasized. Finally, in the diversification strategy, providing new services based on market studies and discovered needs, mastering new specialized knowledge (IT auditing, international financial consulting, and social responsibility auditing), and providing non-audit services provide the opportunity for partners of auditing firms to benefit from the models presented in this research in line with growth planning and, while optimally utilizing the organization's resources and capabilities, enhance the firm's sustainability and competitive advantage.
